Пожалуй, самое страшное, что я читал за последнее время – это июньская еще статья в NYT про то, как школьники друг на друга стучат за неправильные взгляды.

Students have repurposed large meme accounts, set up Google Docs and anonymous pages on Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter, and wielded their personal followings to hold friends and classmates accountable for behavior they deem unacceptable.

“People will post videos of people saying the N-word, or videos where they’re being racist or using derogatory words and stuff like that, and they go viral,” said Sophia Gianotti, 16, a sophomore at Whitesboro High School in Whitesboro, N.Y., where a teacher was recently criticized for stating that “all lives matter” in a virtual school event. (He later apologized.)

Francesca Valle, 17, a student at Verona High School in Verona, N.J., started an account called @exposingracists.nj for her school district and those around it.

“I get a lot of DMs from people sending racist things their classmates have said online, things people have said in livestreams, on Snapchat stories,” she said. “If I have their Instagram or Snapchat, I’ll post that along with their racist behavior because I believe in having productive conversations. My aim is not to send people to bully these people; it’s to send people to go educate and inform them about what they’re saying and how they’re wrong.”

But often, the result is a social media pile-on: harassment, doxxing, cancellation. Brynna Barry, 16, a student at a Catholic day school in Jacksonville, Fla., learned this firsthand.

After posting some advocacy on Instagram and TikTok for the Blue Lives Matter movement, Ms. Barry, whose father is a police officer, was met with vicious harassment. Her posts spread across her peers’ Instagram feeds, and “my own friends were commenting that I was racist, that they can’t support me,” she said. “Things travel fast. I’m nervous about my address getting leaked.”

Помимо всех вот этих "harassment, doxxing, cancellation", что еще можно сделать со школьником и куда на него надо настучать, чтоб на всю жизнь, сука, запомнил? Правильно, стучать надо в колледжи, куда мерзавец нацелился поступать.

Many students believe the only consequence their peers will take seriously is having their college admissions letter rescinded. “I’m not trying to target freshmen or middle schoolers, but people who are about to go to college need to be held accountable for what they say,” said Anamika Arya, the 16-year-old administrator of @Smithtown_Racist_Callouts, which is focused on Smithtown, N.Y.

“People who go to college end up becoming racist lawyers and doctors. I don’t want people like that to keep getting jobs,” Mx. Arya added.

“People think when you call out a racist student, it’s ruining their life,” said Mariwa Gambo, 15, a junior at a New York City public school. “But when you prevent them from advancing, you’re helping to stop the spread of racist lawyers or doctors or people who make it harder for the black community.”

Статья длинная, с примерами и подробностями. Если им верить – а это ж они не про Трампа врут что-нибудь опять, это они своими достижениями гордятся, – то речь не про отдельные случаи, а про массовое движение.

And what better way now than to send armed federal officers in unmarked cars into cities that don’t want them? Unfortunately, protesters in Portland easily rose to the bait. And that chaos set off violent clashes, this time with local police, in Seattle, Omaha and Oakland, California.

“Hitler had his Brown shirts and Mussolini had his Black shirts, now Donald Trump has his camouflage shirts.” Thus began a statement signed by 15 distinguished interdenominational religious leaders in Chicago that I joined, including ministers, priests, and rabbis.
 

The uncharacteristic display of empathy from some Republicans, for people who do not look like them, was a sobering blow to a reelection campaign that relies on the racist undercurrent permeating many of Trump’s most die-hard supporters. So Trump did what he does best: He co-opted the public narrative and changed it to one he thinks he can win.

The president has no control over local police. But Attorney General William Barr’s surrender of Justice Department independence, and acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf’s zeal to please his boss, have allowed Trump to send droves of federal law enforcement agents to cities under the guise of protecting federal buildings.

By design rather than circumstance, federal officers were offered as bait. Protesters were drawn to feds in combat gear like moths to a flame. When federal agents responded with force, the protesters responded with force — which made the agents respond with even more force.

Будущее английского языка

Попалась ссылка на месячной давности текст под названием "Department actions in solidarity with Black Lives Matter" – это отчет главы Department of English университета Rutgers. Одно из мест, где учат будущих журналистов, учителей, редакторов издательств и так далее. Отчитывается она в том, что сделано для борьбы с системным расизмом и что планируется сделать в будущем. Сделано очень много – организованы всякие рабочие группы, комитеты и комиссии с интересными названиями, пересмотрена кадровая политика для углубления и расширения diversity, введено много новых полезных обязательных курсов вроде Art and Protest, а в программе для аспирантов будет упор на community-engaged projects such as educational initiatives in public schools, prison outreach, and different forms of community organizing and political activism.

Очень вдумчиво и тщательно они там подходят к борьбе, нам в советских институтах такой накал идеологических страстей и не снился, разве что в предисловиях к каждому учебнику упоминался очередной съезд партии, да на каждом курсе был один предмет из противоестественных наук вроде диалектического материализма. А тут чем ни занимайся, там будет анти-расизм, социальная справедливость, искусство протестов и политика идентификации. Что касается собственно языка, то они собираются, например, ввести "критическую грамматику". Не знаю, что это такое, потому что описания я не понял (подозреваю, речь идет об отказе от традиционной грамматики, чтобы не мучать неграмотных аспирантов правильного происхождения, взамен же поощрять каждого из них пользоваться своей личной грамматикой). Видимо, это близкий родственник прочих критических теорий.

Incorporating “critical grammar” into our pedagogy.  This approach challenges the familiar dogma that writing instruction should limit emphasis on grammar/sentence-level issues so as to not put students from multilingual, non-standard "academic" English backgrounds at a disadvantage. Instead, it encourages students to develop a critical awareness of the variety of choices available to them w/ regard to micro-level issues in order to empower them and equip them to push against biases based on "written" accents.

Короче говоря, судя по тексту, факультет английского языка университета Rutgers представляет собой заведение для подготовки революционных кадров с расовым уклоном. Другие университеты, насколько я понимаю, ничем не отличаются. Интересно, сколько этих кадров вообще требуется, чтобы вести Америку в светлое будущее? В прессе и в образовании других уже почти нет, вон последних убирают, вроде Салливана.

В Wall Street Journal пытаются провернуть тот же трюк, что в NYT – закрыть раздел Opinion для старомыслов, чтоб не дезинформировали клиентуру.

More than 280 journalists, editors and other employees at The Wall Street Journal sent a letter to their publisher expressing concerns about misinformation in the paper’s opinion section.

The letter says that “opinion’s lack of fact-checking and transparency, and its apparent disregard for evidence, undermine our readers’ trust and our ability to gain credibility with sources.”

Among several examples, the employees cite a column by Vice President Pence in which he said fears of a second wave of coronavirus cases were "overblown" and argued that the administration’s handling of the pandemic has been a success. They said editors failed to adequately fact-check the piece, which was later corrected.

Another example was a reportedly highly-trafficked column titled “The Myth of Systemic Police Racism,” by Heather Mac Donald, a conservative commentator. The Journal employees said the article “selectively presented facts and drew an erroneous conclusion from the underlying data.”

В NYT прошло на ура. Интересно, получится ли у этих. Вторая упомянутая статья – это как раз та, из-за которой пришлось отзывать научное исследование из журнала, чтобы враги не цитировали. Но какими темпами все это происходит, а.

Racist attack on the country’s institutions

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Tuesday denounced President Trump‘s order aiming to block undocumented immigrants from being counted in the 2020 census for the purpose of determining congressional districts, calling it a racist attack on the country’s institutions.

Забавно, совсем недавно демократы очень стеснялись, когда им рассказывали, что мы знаем, зачем им нелегалы. Яростно отрицали и все такое.  А теперь такое благородное негодование – залюбуешься. Расист Трамп пытается отнять у нелегальных иммигрантов их политическое влияние! Покушение на святое, типа, государственные институты в опасности!

Знаковое

Соседи напротив снова выставили знак BLM. Концепция, однако, изменилась. Предыдущий знак был черным по белому, торчал посреди газона и его можно было прочесть за версту. Новый знак графически слегка напоминает тесты на дальтонизм, стоит же на таком фоне, что его не сразу и заметишь. А заметишь – не сразу прочтешь.

Плод межпоколенческого компромисса, надо полагать. Знак пусть стоит, но чтоб видно его не было, хехехе.

Неужели?

У нас тут разворачивается тектоническая история: кажется, правоохранители собрались брать за жопу Майка Мэдигана, который правит Иллинойсом со времен, когда я еще в школе учился, сорок лет скоро. Спикер здешней Палаты представителей c 1983-го года, глава Демократической партии и просто крестный отец всего штата. Налоги здешние, безумные финансы, чудовищная коррупция – это все он. Другого настолько коррумпированного политика в Америке, надо полагать, и близко нет, он этим просто-таки знаменит, но добраться до него никто не мог. Дочка его до прошлого года была Генпрокурором, судей он сам назначает, ставленники его буквально везде, и до сих пор у него все было в порядке. 

Может, конечно, он опять выкрутится. Но похоже, что его наконец съедят.

UPD: на заметку Александеру, который тут доказывал, – хотя с ним никто не спорил, – что республиканцы тоже коррумпированные: пока к Мэдигану только подбираются, соседнего спикера-республиканца уже арестовали.

Filthy Rich

Посмотрел Filthy Rich, это нетфликсовская серия про Эпштейна на четыре эпизода. Ну, с самим Эпштейном все понятно, и то, как они все время упоминают Трампа, тоже удивления не вызывает, и про Акосту тоже – кто-то же должен быть самым виноватым в том, что Эпштейну все это время было можно, – но вот жертвы выглядят как-то не совсем. "Он меня изнасиловал, а на следующий день прислал за мной такси, и я поехала… и вот так ездила к нему еще три или четыре года". "Он насиловал меня по три раза в неделю целый год, а потом я познакомила с ним свою младшую сестру". "Он пытался меня изнасиловать, но я отказалась, а потом так получилось, что я привела к нему еще сорок шесть девочек". Тоже, в общем, ничего удивительного – возраст, деньги, то-се, – но впечатление получается несколько смешанное.
