WASHINGTON — Paul Manafort surrendered to federal authorities Monday morning, after a person close to the case said the first charges were filed in a special counsel investigation.

The charges against Mr. Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, were not immediately clear but represent a significant escalation in a special counsel investigation that has cast a shadow over the president’s first year in office. Also charged was Mr. Manafort’s former business associate Rick Gates, who was also told to surrender on Monday, the person said.

Mr. Manafort walked into the F.B.I.’s field office in Washington at about 8:15 a.m. with his lawyer.

Гейтс вроде тоже около трамповской кампании околачивался, хотя совершенно не помню, в какой роли. После выборов я о нем, кажется, ничего больше не слышал.

Предъявляют им, опять же как и ожидалось, уклонение от налогов – работали на Януковича, получили хренову гору денег, в Штатах их не показали. Кроме того, есть еще мутное обвинение в незаконном лоббировании, без регистрации в качестве лоббиста: из текста следует, что они сами не лоббировали, но посредничали между Януковичем и зарегистрированными лоббистами, а потом врали в ответ на вопросы по этому поводу.  Уж не знаю, что из этого можно будет выкрутить. Про собственно предмет мюллеровского расследования пока ни слова, в третий раз как и ожидалось. Все это, понятно, происходит на предмет предложить Манафорту сделку – типа, отсидишь пятьдесят лет вместо семидесяти, если расскажешь нам что-нибудь интересное про Трампа; посмотрим, что из этого выйдет.

Even from Paul Manafort’s perspective, there may be less to this indictment than meets the eye — it’s not so much a serious allegation of “conspiracy against the United States” as a dubious case of disclosure violations and money movement that would never have been brought had he not drawn attention to himself by temporarily joining the Trump campaign.

From President Trump’s perspective, the indictment is a boon from which he can claim that the special counsel has no actionable collusion case. It appears to reaffirm former FBI director James Comey’s multiple assurances that Trump is not a suspect. And, to the extent it looks like an attempt to play prosecutorial hardball with Manafort, the president can continue to portray himself as the victim of a witch hunt.
