2017 according to our betters

Goodbye 2017. And good riddance.
What a dumpster fire of a year, especially for those who reside and operate in the world of politics and policy. Who will mourn the passing of 2017?

As the year comes to a close, the job of making sense of it begins.
This year, I heard so many people ask, "Is this really happening?" It felt at times as if we were living in an alternate reality. There’s no denying that 2017 was both bizarre and a rallying of all sorts. The question is, who will be left standing when the rally is over?

Grit your teeth. Persevere. Just a few more days and this awful, rotten, no-good, ridiculous, rancorous, sordid, disgraceful year in the civic life of our nation will be over. Here’s hoping that we all — particularly special counsel Robert Mueller — have a better 2018.

Alas, I confess to having difficulty finding much positivity to cling to this year, because as far as the state of the American union is concerned, I have never seen anything as bad as 2017.

—

War, climate change, and the return of fascist politics to the United States and Europe have all shown that the certainties of the 1990s were not certainties at all. Neither Hitler nor the Paris Peace Agreement changed our world permanently. Donald Trump is the president and the future feels canceled.  How do we escape, now? In 2017 the monsters of our nightmares stepped into the daylight, and in response we turned to a new version of the real.

Зачем еще нужны издания вроде Вокса: когда они что-нибудь ругают, можно с достаточной уверенностью предположить, что они это делают из идеологических соображений – и сделать соответствующие выводы. Сейчас проверю этот принцип в очередной раз: прочел там полную презрения и отвращения рецензию на первый нетфликсовский фильм Bright, который сегодня вышел, и намерен его посмотреть. Подозреваю, фильм оказался для воксовцев недостаточно woke, то есть смотреть будет можно.

Нет, Вирджиния

В Вирджинии происходит какой-то неимоверный электоральный цирк. В тамошней легислатуре разница между партиями в одно место сейчас, и на выборах месяц назад демократический и республиканский кандидаты на это очень важное место получили почти одинаковое число голосов. Пришлось пересчитывать. Пересчет показал победу демократки с перевесом в один голос. Демократы шумно отпраздновали победу со всеми приличествующими речами про то, как американский народ отвергает трампизм, расизм и сексизм. Тут тамошний суд признал законным еще один бюллетень в пользу республиканского кандидата, и образовалась ничья. Теперь они там будут решать судьбу этого места и большинства в легислатуре жребием.

Можно смело прогнозировать, что в случае удачи демократки на жеребьевке мы снова во множестве услышим победные речи про доказанное банкротство трампизма.

Lethal

The Trump administration on Wednesday approved the sale of lethal arms to Ukraine’s government as the country battles pro-Russian separatists in its eastern provinces.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the administration approved the sale of Model M107A1 Sniper Systems and associated equipment to the country at a value of $41.5 million. The administration has not yet moved to approve heavier arms requested by Ukraine’s government, including Javelin anti-tank missiles.

The move from the White House is a departure from the Obama administration, which frequently condemned Russian aggression in the Ukraine but refused to approve the sale of arms to the country’s western-aligned government.

Есть у меня пара знакомых, у которых от этой новости должен бы по идее зайти ум за разум. Но не зайдет, компенсаторные механизмы там будь здоров, справляются и не с такими диссонансами.

But this is also a press failure, a case where the media is not adequately reporting an important success because it does not fit into the narrative of Trumpian disaster in which our journalistic entities are all invested.

Вкратце – Lisa Bloom, дочь Глории Олред и тоже адвокат по таким же делам, собирала по донорам денежку для нескольких обвинительниц Трампа. Чтобы им интереснее было его обвинять, видимо.

California lawyer Lisa Bloom’s efforts included offering to sell alleged victims’ stories to TV outlets in return for a commission for herself, arranging a donor to pay off one Trump accuser’s mortgage and attempting to secure a six-figure payment for another woman who ultimately declined to come forward after being offered as much as $750,000, the clients told The Hill.

Для комплекта – заявления Блум и одной из обвинительниц. Денежку собирали просто так, ну и чтобы обеспечить безопасность обвинительниц, потому что Трамп же, а врать там или придумывать чего-нибудь вовсе не просили, ни-ни, все честно.
