President Donald Trump’s poll numbers continue to sink as cases and death tolls rise. The only thing that could possibly save him is political violence in America’s cities. And that’s what he’s cooking up.

It’s entirely in Trump’s playbook to provoke civic discord. He’s been drawing his detractors into his game for four years. And what better way now than to send armed federal officers in unmarked cars into cities that don’t want them? Unfortunately, protesters in Portland easily rose to the bait. And that chaos set off violent clashes, this time with local police, in Seattle, Omaha and Oakland, California.

“Hitler had his Brown shirts and Mussolini had his Black shirts, now Donald Trump has his camouflage shirts.” Thus began a statement signed by 15 distinguished interdenominational religious leaders in Chicago that I joined, including ministers, priests, and rabbis.
 

The uncharacteristic display of empathy from some Republicans, for people who do not look like them, was a sobering blow to a reelection campaign that relies on the racist undercurrent permeating many of Trump’s most die-hard supporters. So Trump did what he does best: He co-opted the public narrative and changed it to one he thinks he can win.

The president has no control over local police. But Attorney General William Barr’s surrender of Justice Department independence, and acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf’s zeal to please his boss, have allowed Trump to send droves of federal law enforcement agents to cities under the guise of protecting federal buildings.

By design rather than circumstance, federal officers were offered as bait. Protesters were drawn to feds in combat gear like moths to a flame. When federal agents responded with force, the protesters responded with force — which made the agents respond with even more force.

Будущее английского языка

Попалась ссылка на месячной давности текст под названием "Department actions in solidarity with Black Lives Matter" – это отчет главы Department of English университета Rutgers. Одно из мест, где учат будущих журналистов, учителей, редакторов издательств и так далее. Отчитывается она в том, что сделано для борьбы с системным расизмом и что планируется сделать в будущем. Сделано очень много – организованы всякие рабочие группы, комитеты и комиссии с интересными названиями, пересмотрена кадровая политика для углубления и расширения diversity, введено много новых полезных обязательных курсов вроде Art and Protest, а в программе для аспирантов будет упор на community-engaged projects such as educational initiatives in public schools, prison outreach, and different forms of community organizing and political activism.

Очень вдумчиво и тщательно они там подходят к борьбе, нам в советских институтах такой накал идеологических страстей и не снился, разве что в предисловиях к каждому учебнику упоминался очередной съезд партии, да на каждом курсе был один предмет из противоестественных наук вроде диалектического материализма. А тут чем ни занимайся, там будет анти-расизм, социальная справедливость, искусство протестов и политика идентификации. Что касается собственно языка, то они собираются, например, ввести "критическую грамматику". Не знаю, что это такое, потому что описания я не понял (подозреваю, речь идет об отказе от традиционной грамматики, чтобы не мучать неграмотных аспирантов правильного происхождения, взамен же поощрять каждого из них пользоваться своей личной грамматикой). Видимо, это близкий родственник прочих критических теорий.

Incorporating “critical grammar” into our pedagogy.  This approach challenges the familiar dogma that writing instruction should limit emphasis on grammar/sentence-level issues so as to not put students from multilingual, non-standard "academic" English backgrounds at a disadvantage. Instead, it encourages students to develop a critical awareness of the variety of choices available to them w/ regard to micro-level issues in order to empower them and equip them to push against biases based on "written" accents.

Короче говоря, судя по тексту, факультет английского языка университета Rutgers представляет собой заведение для подготовки революционных кадров с расовым уклоном. Другие университеты, насколько я понимаю, ничем не отличаются. Интересно, сколько этих кадров вообще требуется, чтобы вести Америку в светлое будущее? В прессе и в образовании других уже почти нет, вон последних убирают, вроде Салливана.

В Wall Street Journal пытаются провернуть тот же трюк, что в NYT – закрыть раздел Opinion для старомыслов, чтоб не дезинформировали клиентуру.

More than 280 journalists, editors and other employees at The Wall Street Journal sent a letter to their publisher expressing concerns about misinformation in the paper’s opinion section.

The letter says that “opinion’s lack of fact-checking and transparency, and its apparent disregard for evidence, undermine our readers’ trust and our ability to gain credibility with sources.”

Among several examples, the employees cite a column by Vice President Pence in which he said fears of a second wave of coronavirus cases were "overblown" and argued that the administration’s handling of the pandemic has been a success. They said editors failed to adequately fact-check the piece, which was later corrected.

Another example was a reportedly highly-trafficked column titled “The Myth of Systemic Police Racism,” by Heather Mac Donald, a conservative commentator. The Journal employees said the article “selectively presented facts and drew an erroneous conclusion from the underlying data.”

Racist attack on the country’s institutions

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Tuesday denounced President Trump‘s order aiming to block undocumented immigrants from being counted in the 2020 census for the purpose of determining congressional districts, calling it a racist attack on the country’s institutions.

Забавно, совсем недавно демократы очень стеснялись, когда им рассказывали, что мы знаем, зачем им нелегалы. Яростно отрицали и все такое.  А теперь такое благородное негодование – залюбуешься. Расист Трамп пытается отнять у нелегальных иммигрантов их политическое влияние! Покушение на святое, типа, государственные институты в опасности!

What has happened, I think, is relatively simple: A critical mass of the staff and management at New York Magazine and Vox Media no longer want to associate with me, and, in a time of ever tightening budgets, I’m a luxury item they don’t want to afford. And that’s entirely their prerogative. They seem to believe, and this is increasingly the orthodoxy in mainstream media, that any writer not actively committed to critical theory in questions of race, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity is actively, physically harming co-workers merely by existing in the same virtual space. Actually attacking, and even mocking, critical theory’s ideas and methods, as I have done continually in this space, is therefore out of sync with the values of Vox Media. That, to the best of my understanding, is why I’m out of here.

Товарищ ДиАнджело упрощает

NYT публикует мягкую критику положения дел в анти-расизме. Мол, не слишком ли разошлись энтузиасты анти-расизма в тотальном отрицании европейской культуры? Нет ли в этом какого-нибудь внутреннего противоречия?

Не то они решили подправить себе репутацию после письма Вайсс, не то пришлось выступить из-за повышенного интереса публики к роскошным материалам смитсоновского музея Афро-Американской Истории и Культуры. Кто не видел, кстати – захватывающее чтение.

Хроники процесса

Bari Weiss, одна из подписантов "A Letter on Justice and Open Debate", которое мы в нескольких местах обсуждали, уходит из NYT. Вот ее заявление об уходе, тоже манифест, рекомендую к прочтению. То есть для нас там ничего нового нет, мы давно знаем, что такое NYT, но тем не менее.

Профессор Кац, который отреагировал в Quilette на сказочное письмо принстонских преподавателей, сейчас находится под ответным огнем. Интересно, выдержит ли.

Вообще такие новости каждый день, просто люди менее заметные и истории не такие нашумевшие. Вроде вот этой, например.

Это все, заметим, на левом фланге происходит. По той простой причине, что правого фланга больше нет, он идеологически и информационно уничтожен. Какой-нибудь The Hill, разумеется, называет Weiss "conservative writer", но это совсем не так – парой абзацев дальше они же пишут, что она сама считает себя "left-leaning centrist". Нет там больше консерваторов, всех убрали из информационного пространства и теперь жрут друг друга. И это вам не "новый маккартизм" какой-нибудь. Деятельность сенатора МакКарти встретила массовый отпор на всех уровнях, пресса его обрабатывала не хуже, чем сейчас Трампа, кино до сих пор снимают нужной направленности. То, что происходит сейчас, той же прессой всемерно поддерживается. Нормальные партийные чистки и борьба с уклонизмом, с попутным решением своих кадровых и материальных проблем.

Law enforcement officials in St. Louis have allegedly served a warrant on the St. Louis couple who recently defended their home when a large mob of angry demonstrators allegedly trespassed onto their private property.

“5 On Your Side has learned St. Louis police officers executed a search warrant Friday evening at the home of Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the Central West end couple who confronted protesters with weapons in June,” KSDK News reported. “Sources tell 5 On Your Side police seized one of the weapons, the rifle, from the couple and they told police their attorney has the pistol seen in photos.”

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner, a Democrat, claimed that the McCloskey’s defending their private property was a “violent assault” and that authorities “will use the full power of Missouri law to hold people accountable.”

Прокурорша та же самая, которая отпустила всех задержанных погромщиков без предъявления обвинения.

ST. LOUIS — Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt says St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner has not charged any of the people that St. Louis police officers have arrested during recent violent protests and, as a result, they’ve all been released.

Это Миссури, заметим, не Калифорния и не Нью-Йорк. Город, конечно, но все равно Миссури же. И вот погромы там устраивать можно, а демонстрировать оружие толпе, которая вломилась на твою частную собственность – нельзя, это "violent assault". Этот МакКлоски, который всю жизнь голосовал за демократов и давал деньги ActBlue, он теперь что, интересно, думает по этому поводу?
