The conceptual penis as a social construct

Abstract

Anatomical penises may exist, but as pre-operative transgendered women also have anatomical penises, the penis vis-à-vis maleness is an incoherent construct. We argue that the conceptual penis is better understood not as an anatomical organ but as a social construct isomorphic to performative toxic masculinity. Through detailed poststructuralist discursive criticism and the example of climate change, this paper will challenge the prevailing and damaging social trope that penises are best understood as the male sexual organ and reassign it a more fitting role as a type of masculine performance.

Музейное дело

Убил сегодня полдня, надзирая за четвероклассниками на экскурсии. Шаперонил филд трип, короче. Экскурсия была в музей истории Чикаго. Музей отражает современные исторические веяния: судя по экспозиции, белых в истории Чикаго почти не было, разве что семья О’Лири, в чьем сарае начался знаменитый пожар, да Эл Капон, известный в русскоязычной среде как Аль Капоне. Особенно впечатлила выставка Spies, Traitors, and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America. Там примерно три четверти занято роскошными стендами про Ку-Клукс-Клан и про right-wing militia, выделен угол про коммунистов и маккартизм (коммунисты тогда были нехорошие, но маккартизм – вместе с ФБР – все равно хуже), и показывают фильм про Weather Underground и их борьбу против войны во Вьетнаме (с отчетливой симпатией, хотя про дружбу постаревших террористов с прошлым президентом все-таки не упоминают). Есть большой стенд про Тимоти МакВея, разумеется. А отдельно стоит картинка про 9-11, из которой абсолютно невозможно понять, что там случилось, и еще есть маленькая витрина с поясом (точнее, жилетом) шахида, и пояснительной запиской, что такие пояса используются некими “экстремистами”. Что за экстремисты и откуда они берутся, неизвестно; тоже, наверно, right-wing милиционеры. Ислам в экспозиции не упомянут ни разу.

Такая у нас теперь история.

Embers of Resistance

A group of students at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government has reportedly launched a “Resistance School” to fight back against President Trump’s agenda.

The “school” is a free four-week online course “that will sharpen the tools we need to fight back at the federal, state, and local levels,” according to the group’s website, as first reported by the Boston Globe.

“Our goal is to keep the embers of resistance alive through concrete learning, community engagement, and forward-looking action.”

The co-founders of the training program told the Globe that the inspiration for the idea came from conversations following Trump’s inauguration.

“On November 8, we lost more than just the presidency,” the group wrote on its website. “We lost yet more ground in the decades-long campaign against progressive values.”

“Republicans now control the Senate, House, and more state legislatures than they have in almost 200 years. Those losses have emboldened the right to launch an all-out attack against our nation’s creed – that all are created equal.”

The 11 creators have also compared themselves to “Dumbledore’s Army,” according to the Globe, referring to a secret group of students in the “Harry Potter” series that met secretly to stand up against the wizarding school’s officials and learn spells to fight against dark magic.

Dumbledore’s Army, насколько я помню, была вынуждена готовиться к боевым действиям в глубокой тайне, не рекламируя программу тренировок в Daily Prophet. Безмятежность бойцов Сопротивления обусловлена, видимо, тем, что в гарвардскую School of Government не прислали пока инквизитора из Департамента Образования; такими вещами предыдущая администрация занималась, правильная, а Темная Сторона пока вроде в этом не замечена.

Все прекрасно: кто протестует, против чего, где протестует, как протестует. Всего полвека назад эти протестанты однозначно воспринимались бы как банда сумасшедших, но времена поменялись, и теперь у нас вот такие политические новости. Прогресс не остановить.

Чернорубашечники пришли, как у них водится, поливать сторонников Трампа слезогонкой; результат получился нетрадиционный. Трамповцы штурмовикам вломили как следует, после чего троих черных арестовали полицейские – за слезогонку. Фотографии по ссылке с картинки рекомендую: прислужники кровавого трамповского режима травили борцов за народное счастье собаками, очень убедительно выглядит.

Хочется надеяться, конечно, что приведет это не к дальнейшей эскалации, а к появлению у левых здравого смысла, но надеяться на такое оптимизма не хватает.
