Progressives are declaring an early victory over Neil Gorsuch’s Supreme Court nomination.

Even if President Trump’s pick is confirmed after a historic Senate vote on Thursday to end the minority party’s ability to filibuster Supreme Court nominations, liberal groups think they’ll win.

They predict that Republicans will face a backlash over changing the Senate’s rules and will have to own any controversial decisions handed down by the Supreme Court heading into the 2018 midterms and 2020 presidential election.

Whatever works, лишь бы не плакало. То есть backlash какой-нибудь будет, и расклад в Конгрессе рано или поздно поменяется, но он же потом и обратно поменяется. И снова туда, и снова обратно. И президент будет другой. А Горсуч останется надолго.

“Let’s be clear: the decision to blow up the Senate is squarely in the hands of Republicans, and Republicans alone. And it will be only Republican votes to change the rules,” she wrote in a memo to reporters.

Embers of Resistance

A group of students at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government has reportedly launched a “Resistance School” to fight back against President Trump’s agenda.

The “school” is a free four-week online course “that will sharpen the tools we need to fight back at the federal, state, and local levels,” according to the group’s website, as first reported by the Boston Globe.

“Our goal is to keep the embers of resistance alive through concrete learning, community engagement, and forward-looking action.”

The co-founders of the training program told the Globe that the inspiration for the idea came from conversations following Trump’s inauguration.

“On November 8, we lost more than just the presidency,” the group wrote on its website. “We lost yet more ground in the decades-long campaign against progressive values.”

“Republicans now control the Senate, House, and more state legislatures than they have in almost 200 years. Those losses have emboldened the right to launch an all-out attack against our nation’s creed – that all are created equal.”

The 11 creators have also compared themselves to “Dumbledore’s Army,” according to the Globe, referring to a secret group of students in the “Harry Potter” series that met secretly to stand up against the wizarding school’s officials and learn spells to fight against dark magic.

Dumbledore’s Army, насколько я помню, была вынуждена готовиться к боевым действиям в глубокой тайне, не рекламируя программу тренировок в Daily Prophet. Безмятежность бойцов Сопротивления обусловлена, видимо, тем, что в гарвардскую School of Government не прислали пока инквизитора из Департамента Образования; такими вещами предыдущая администрация занималась, правильная, а Темная Сторона пока вроде в этом не замечена.

Шо, опять?

Я вижу, начинается очередная паника по поводу ЖЖ. На этот раз из-за нового пользовательского соглашения. Ну-ну; прошлый раз был совсем недавно, все (опять) дружно перебрались на DW и даже принялись было (в отличие от предыдущих нескольких раз) там комментировать, но это сошло на нет буквально за месяц. Только несколько человек самых стойких продолжает до сих пор, но вообще количество комментариев там стремится к нулю.

Уверен, что и на этот раз будет то же самое. И ничего хорошего в этом, кстати, нет.

Вон Сапожник жалуется на ЖЖ, вспоминает, как был ЖЖ хорош раньше, а в качестве альтернатив упоминает только Фейсбук и Вконтакте, про DW он вообще не помнит, хотя DW – это как раз тот самый ранний ЖЖ, по которому он ностальгирует. И переход туда облегчен максимально, и более того, все уже там – а вот поди ж ты, никак не примется. Что ж поделаешь, никто нам, тормозам, не виноват. Наверно, надо ЖЖ просто закрыть, иначе так ничего и не поможет, даже если нас тут будут два раза в неделю бить и ежевечерне ритуально плевать нам в морду.

Филибустерное

Пишут, что Шумер располагает голосами для филибустера по утверждению Горсача. Следующий вопрос – воспользуются ли демократы этими голосами. Надо полагать, воспользуются, их избиратели уклонизма не потерпят. После этого возникает вопрос, хватит ли голосов МакКоннелу, чтобы филибустер нюкнуть – и вот тут уже никакой уверенности нет. Если голосов не наберется, это будет колоссальная победа демократов, причем настоящая, а не как в истории с отменой Obamacare. И у республиканцев запросто может найтись три сенатора, готовых демократам эту победу отдать. Заявлений по этому поводу пока никаких не было, но ничуть не удивлюсь, если именно так оно и окажется. Республиканцы же.

UPD: Появился слух, что МакКейн собирается поддержать отмену филибустера. Без него трех ренегатов скорее всего не наберется.

House approves bill to force public release of EPA science

Чтобы вынуть из правительственного агентства информацию об основаниях, на которых оно принимает свои регуляции, понадобился специальный закон. В данном случае это выглядит особенно живописно, поскольку в качестве оснований выступает предположительно наука. И еще посмотрим, удастся ли вытащить эту науку из EPA даже с помощью специального закона.

В принципе, когда достигнут такой уровень, правительство надо расформировывать полностью, каждого десятого чиновника вешать, здания взрывать, а столицу переносить на другой конец континента.
