2016 Was the Year White Liberals Realized How Unjust, Racist, and Sexist America Is
After Trump’s election, it is more or less impossible to believe that we are making meaningful progress. White liberals who woke up horrified on Nov. 9 weren’t horrified because the world had suddenly changed—we were horrified because the scales had finally fallen from our eyes, and we could at least see our unjust, racist, sexist country for what it is. The next president will not be a woman, the makeup of the Supreme Court will not shift toward progressivism, and we are not jolly passengers on a cruise ship sailing toward an era of tolerance, justice, and respect for the dignity and rights of all.
To look for an upside to all this would be ironic.

В какой стране ни займись прогрессом и воспитанием Нового Человека, рано или поздно обязательно выясняется, что народишко попался совершенно непригодный для этого дела. Не желает платить за настоятельно необходимые либералам вещи, не верит своим moral and intellectual betters, и голосовать себе позволяет не так, как ему говорят умные и образованные люди. А ведь только такой образ жизни можно назвать демократическим. Любые другие варианты (когда народишко своим проверенным moral and intellectual betters с правильными взглядами предпочитает кого-нибудь другого) – это авторитаризм, фашизм и нацизм.
Democracy is in retreat around the world. From Poland and Turkey to Russia and the United States, voters have placed their faith in authoritarian leaders. This should not be surprising. In fact, it is remarkable that the democratic ideal survived so long. Three centuries ago, philosophers of the Enlightenment began telling us that reason is more important than tradition, and that people should shape their own lives rather than submitting to leaders. That was an audacious rebellion against all of previous human history. For a time it seemed to be succeeding.
Today’s cry of protest, though, is a rejection of the Enlightenment. Voters are making clear that they want to be ruled with a strong hand, not rule themselves.
Не получилось, в общем, у либералов задвинуть человечество в светлое будущее. Эпоха Просвещения окончена. Через пару лет разберемся еще и с Возрождением, и вперед, к Темным Векам.
Интересно, какие выводы сделают те, кто принимает эти тексты всерьез. Чего доброго, к террору перейдут по старой памяти – ну а чего, в самом деле, церемониться с несознательным человечеством. Не хочет добровольно, придется силой.
