Не надо было, похоже, бросать Петреуса под каток. CNN сообщает, что Петреус намерен, во-первых, рассказать Конгрессу, что он на самом деле сразу знал, что это террористическая атака. Согласно тому же источнику, Петреус говорит, что материалы для Райс пришли не из ЦРУ, а откуда-то из администрации президента.

Just a few minutes ago on CNN, Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr reported that a high-placed source informed her that former CIA Chief David Petraeus will use his upcoming testimony to amend his previous testimony. According to this source, Petraeus will tell the closed door congressional hearing that he knew “almost immediately” that the September 11 anniversary attack on our Libyan consulate was a terrorist attack committed by the al-Qaeda-linked militia Ansar Al Sharia. […] Petraeus also told this source he believed the CIA talking points given to Susan Rice came from within the White House or Administration.

На слушаниях по Бенгази конгрессмены сильно друг на друга сердились. Речь шла о Райс; республиканцы спрашивали, зачем надо было врать, демократы отвечали в том духе, что сами дураки, у вас вон тоже Колин Пауэлл врал в свое время, потому что ему разведка такие сведения дала. Кроме того, по мнению демократов, во всем виноваты как раз республиканцы, которые урезали ассигнования на безопасность дипломатических миссий; каким образом это объясняет очевидное вранье администрации, не уточнялось. Выражения никто не выбирал – республиканцы впрямую говорят о наглом вранье, демократы открыто объясняют, что выборы они выиграли, народ сказал свое веское слово, поэтому любые попытки обвинять президента или его администрацию будут ими жестоко пресекаться. Похвальная откровенность.

He added, “The election is over. The president won reelection. The voices of the public were heard. They want us to cooperate. If you want an honest investigation of this tragedy, we will join you. But if you want to persist in trying to put this, lay this somehow at the doorstep of the president or the secretary of State or the United Nations ambassador, you will find us ready and willing to resist to the teeth.“

Ситуация пока что выглядит все хуже и хуже для ЦРУ. Атаковали, похоже, именно их, Стивенс просто под руку попался – возможно, участвовал в какой-то их затее в этот вечер. Помощь они не запрашивали, что косвенно подтверждает сведения об отдаче приказа “stand down”, а потом, по всей вероятности, пытались обмануть начальство: CBS утверждает, что в их материалах для Райс и впрямь не было ни слова о терроризме. Петреус в Конгрессе тоже подтверждал версию о протестах и видео, хотя, по некоторым свидетельствам, сам в это не верил.

Обама в этом деле выглядит совершеннейшим клоуном, если вспомнить его героический момент на вторых дебатах, где он срезал Ромни, сказав, что с самого начала называл атаку терактом, но в его сторону пока никто старательно не смотрит.

WSJ тоже полагает, что Петреус пострадал, поскольку сопротивлялся сбрасыванию под автобус. Ну, сбросили под каток вместо автобуса. А вон Хиллари во всем призналась, и теперь спокойно отсиживается в Австралии.

Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who is widely expected to become the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee next year, told reporters that in a closed-door session of the committee on Tuesday afternoon, intelligence officials said that they “let everybody know immediately” what they knew.

He described the Democrats sitting on the committee as being startled by the testimony.

OBAMA: If Senator McCain and Senator Graham, and others want to go after somebody? They should go after me. And I’m happy to have that discussion with them. But for them to go after the U.N. ambassador who had nothing to do with Benghazi? And was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received? And to besmirch her reputation is outrageous.

Someone else told me that General Petraeus, on the Hill that day, Director Petraeus I should say, said privately to one of the members of Congress said, ‘This is happened in Benghazi.’ He said, ‘Do you want the official line or do you want the real truth?. So I think he knew that he was not telling the full truth. He is, on the other hand, the CIA director. They were involved in some pretty complicated things, perhaps, in Benghazi. To be fair to him, maybe he thought that national security required him not to fully spill the beans and to kind of go along with a line that was otherwise politically convenient for the administration.

МакКейн требует создания специальной комиссии по расследованию этой захватывающей истории. Рид, понятно, против.

Приходится против моих правил много цитировать Fox News: ничего не поделаешь, этой темой вплотную занимаются только они. Публикации в остальных местах по большей части создают ожидаемое впечатление глухой обороны.

Белый дом стоит на своем: Обама ничегошеньки про Петреуса не знал.

Press Secretary Jay Carney said President Obama was “surprised” when he learned last Thursday that Petraeus had carried on an extramarital affair. While the FBI had at that point already been investigating for months, Carney said “protocols” at the agency apparently kept them from notifying Congress and other agencies in the Executive Branch. […] “It is simply a fact that the White House was not aware of the situation regarding General Petraeus until Wednesday and the situation regarding General Allen until Friday,” Carney said.

Все знали. ФБР знало, Холдер еще летом знал, до Кантора и то слухи дошли, а Обама – не знал, потому что у ФБР такие специальные протоколы есть – не докладывать наверх о таких вещах. А кто не верит, тот дурак.

A well-placed Washington source confirms to Fox News that there were Libyan militiamen being held at the CIA annex in Benghazi and that their presence was being looked at as a possible motive for the staged attack on the consulate and annex that night.

According to multiple intelligence sources who have served in Benghazi, there were more than just Libyan militia members who were held and interrogated by CIA contractors at the CIA annex in the days prior to the attack. Other prisoners from additional countries in Africa and the Middle East were brought to this location.

Если это правда, это может объяснять всю дурь с разговорами про протесты из-за видео. Обама – сразу после инаугурации – издал мудацкий высокоморальный указ, запрещающий ЦРУ держать людей под замком и допрашивать их нехорошими методами. Стало быть, или ЦРУ на этот указ забило болт самостоятельно, или Обама им втихаря это разрешил. В любом случае получается очень некрасиво, надо как-то отмазываться, отсюда и сказки про разъяренных кинокритиков. Которые, если все подтвердится, только добавят аромата. Вопрос вот в чем: администрация рассказывала эти сказки, доверяя ЦРУ, или хорошо зная, что произошло на самом деле? Учитывая, что в деле участвовали помимо ЦРУ еще Пентагон с Госдепартаментом, и что Госдепартамент практически сразу начал намекать на свое несогласие с версией про видео, остается предположить, что администрация все прекрасно знала.

Шансы на то, что ливийский “non-scandal” превратится-таки во что-нибудь вроде Уотергейта, ощутимо повышаются.

But law enforcement officials did not notify anyone outside the F.B.I. or the Justice Department until last week because the investigation was incomplete and initial concerns about possible security breaches, which would demand more immediate action, did not appear to be justified, the officials said.

Не доложили по начальству, стало быть, потому что не было criminal or security implications, так что и докладывать было вроде не о чем. Однако дальше там же пишут:

It was at that point — sometime in the late summer — that lower-level Justice Department officials notified supervisors that the case had become more complicated, and the Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section began working on the investigation as well.

То есть понятно, что к концу лета об этом должны были знать все подряд. Однако никаких телодвижений не произошло; а потом приключилось Бенгази, утечки и заявления из ЦРУ, заголовки типа “Petraeus Throws Obama Under the Bus”, и закономерный результат. Сразу после выборов, но до слушаний в Конгрессе. Ясное дело, теперь нам рассказывают, что это был шок, удар молнии, и никто ничего не знал до последнего.

Бродуэлл и Бенгази

Оказывается, недели три назад Бродуэлл упомянула в Денверском университете, что по ее сведениям в заведении ЦРУ в Бенгази содержались пленные боевики, и атака была организована с целью этих боевиков оттуда вытащить. ЦРУ, понятно, опровергает.

Вся история приобретает такие очертания, что любо-дорого.

Still, the White House, with concurrence by the FBI and Justice Department, held off on asking for Petraeus’ resignation until after the election. His resignation occurred three days after the election, avoiding the possibility that Obama’s ill-fated appointment of Petraeus could become an issue in the election.

FBI agents on the case were aware that such a decision had been made to hold off on forcing him out until after the election and were outraged.
