In a CNN interview on March 26, Dr. Redfield, the former CDC director under Trump, made a candid admission: “I am of the point of view that I still think the most likely etiology of this pathogen in Wuhan was from a laboratory, you know, escaped.” Redfield added that he believed the release was an accident, not an intentional act. In his view, nothing that happened since his first calls with Dr. Gao changed a simple fact: The WIV needed to be ruled out as a source, and it hadn’t been.

After the interview aired, death threats flooded his inbox. The vitriol came not just from strangers who thought he was being racially insensitive but also from prominent scientists, some of whom used to be his friends. One said he should just “wither and die.”

Black thought can help us free science from the white supremacist traditions of scientists. Scientists vs. Science will use Black feminist and anti-colonialist analyses to show that white supremacy is a total epistemic system that affects even our most “objective” areas of knowledge production. The talk hinges on the development of the concept of white empiricism, which I introduced to give a name to the way that anti-intellectual white supremacy plays a role in physicists’ analysis of when empirical data is important and what counts as empirical data. This white empiricism shapes both Black women’s (and other) experiences in physics and the actual knowledge produced about physics. Until this is understood and addressed directly, systems of domination will continue to play a major role in the practice of physics.

Для верующих в Науку

The long-awaited first issue of Journal of Controversial Ideas (JCI), which allows academics of all disciplines to publish peer-reviewed research anonymously, has just been released. In an editorial leading the online issue, the co-editors, philosophers Peter Singer, Francesca Minerva, and Jeff McMahan, write: “By permitting publication under a pseudonym, we hope to enable authors to fulfil their duty to pursue the truth without putting their careers or physical or mental security at risk. Intellectual and moral progress should not require heroes or martyrs.”

То есть состояние науки таково, что понадобился специальный журнал для публикации статей анонимно. Чтобы, значит, не рисковать карьерами или физической (и душевной) безопасностью. Потому что полно таких научных направлений, где отклонение от линии партии немедленно приводит к таким рискам.

Кто это недавно писал, не помню, – когда всякая политическая херня проталкивается в качестве "научно обоснованной", наука неизбежно должна быть ручной и показывать только то, что требуется. Именно так дело и обстоит. Причем этот этап тут уже пройден, научные консенсусы успешно формируются в зависимости от текущих политических нужд, и можно требовать от электората "веры в науку" совершенно невозбранно. А заодно переходить к прямому расистскому людоедству, как вот в этом случае.

And biologists like myself often sit quietly, afraid to defend our own field out of fear that our decade of education followed by continued research, job searches, and the quest for tenure might be made obsolete overnight if the mob decides to target one of us for speaking up. Because of this, our objections take place almost entirely between one another in private whisper networks, despite the fact that a majority of biologists are extremely troubled by these attacks to our field by social justice activists. This is an untenable situation.

Британские ученые сообщают, что орангутаны готовят себе противовоспалительные мази и втирают их в суставы.

"For the first time ever, self-medication activities of orangutans has been confirmed through this research," said Dr. Ivona Foitová, of Masaryk University in Brno Czech Republic and Gadjah Mada University of Yogyakarta Indonesia, and co-author of a recent Scientific Reports paper reporting this discovery.

"Pharmacological laboratory analyses revealed and proved leaf extracts of Dracaena cantleyi, which wild orangutans have been observed rubbing on their bodies, to have anti-inflammatory properties."

Dr. Helen Morrogh-Bernard, Co-Director of Borneo Nature Foundation and lead author of the Scientific Reports paper, said "This is very exciting news as it confirms self-medication in orangutans, the first report of self-medication in an Asian ape, and for the first time, to our knowledge, the external application of an anti-inflammatory agent in animals."

Напоминает где-то прочитанную байку про то, что тамошние аборигены считают орангутанов разумными, причем умнее самих аборигенов, потому что аборигены работают, а орангутаны просто живут себе.

Интересно, а каковы вообще критерии разумности? Ну, кроме принадлежности к Демократической партии? Что те орангутаны должны сделать, чтобы британские ученые решили, что они не животные, а сапиенсы?

В научном журнале по феминистской географии рядом с нашумевшей статьей про то, что не надо цитировать белых ученых мужского пола, есть еще много разных статей. Например, статья под названием Fucking geographers! Or the epistemological consequences of neglecting the lusty researcher’s body. Подозреваю, что народ перешел от изготовления пранк-статей к организации пранк-журналов; в перспективе, надо полагать, маячат пранк-факультеты в некогда приличных университетах. Впрочем, что это я – их там давно навалом, дело-то прибыльное.

Активисты и наука

У Аввы ссылка на любопытную книгу о конфликтах между активистами и учеными. Несколько разных случаев, в том числе много про трансгендеров. Авва там пишет, что автор книги права, давать волю активистам не стоит, потому что это негативно влияет на свободу исследований (с жутковатым примером, как транс-активисты травили ученого, который придерживался неправильных взглядов), но уточняет, что наука эта, возможно, не такая уж и наука, и общественное мнение в таких темах меняется за счет других факторов, гораздо более мощных. Чистая правда. На науку на самом деле всем накласть, главными стимулами остаются власть и деньги, и наука может оказаться полезным инструментом в движении к этим целям. А может оказаться препятствием, которое надо будет устранить. С помощью других ученых, или активистской травлей, или уголовным преследованием, или еще как. Мы это видим непрерывно в самых разных местах, что с трансами, что с глобальным потеплением, куда ни плюнь.

А книгу надо будет почитать.

Vox – один из тех восторженных недоумков левых источников, о которых я тут давеча упоминал в связи с iWatch – решил исправиться и написать про iWatch гадость. Гадость они нашли вот какую: оказывается, интерфейс яблочасов вызывает реакцию у трипофобов. То есть людей, которые пугаются при виде множественных дырок. И насчитывается таких людей якобы до 16% населения. И вот, значит, их эппловские кружочки на экране слегка напрягают.

По-моему, это даже круче, чем гнущиеся телефоны, но раз это Vox, верить в это прямо сразу не стоит. Если эти объяснительные журналисты упомянут, что земля круглая, я на всякий случай проверю: очень уж много я там читал всяких удивительных объяснений.
