По наводке merig00: в Индиане демократов поймали на том, что они подделывали подписи в петициях насчет внесения кандидатов в избирательный бюллетень на primaries. Просто переписывали их из имеющихся демократических списков, чтобы не суетиться попусту. Как поймали – бывший губернатор обнаружил свою фамилию среди подписантов обамовской петиции и возмутился, потому что бился тогда на стороне Клинтон. В петиции Клинтон, однако, тоже присутствуют поддельные подписи.

Петиции эти – штука формальная, но по закону необходимая. Некоторый потенциал у скандала есть, но ничего из него, скорее всего, не выйдет. Подписи подделывались в одном из округов, расследование худо-бедно начали, но прокурор там демократ, и вряд ли найдет что-нибудь серьезное. Кто-то из индианских сенаторов требует, чтобы это дело расследовал Департамент юстиции, но Департаменом юстиции командует сейчас Эрих Холдер, заработавший широкую известность избирательным подходом к чувствительным для администрации делам, начиная с истории о том, как “Черные пантеры” пугали народ на избирательном участке в ноябре 2008-го.

Шуму, впрочем, немножко будет.

Умеренные консерваторы

Была на этих выборах такая прослойка – консерваторы, которые голосовали за Обаму. И вообще центристы. Сейчас там происходит выяснение животрепещущего вопроса: как это могло так получиться, о чем они при этом думали, и что теперь делать. Вот Peter Robinson пишет о нескольких таких интеллектуалах.

Buckley, Gergen and Brooks all attended expensive private universities, then spent their careers moving among the wealthy and powerful who inhabit the seaboard corridor running from Washington to Boston. If any of the three strolled uninvited into a cocktail party in Georgetown, Cambridge or New Haven, the hostess would emit yelps of delight. Yet all three originally got Obama wrong.

Contrast Buckley, Gergen and Brooks with, let us say, Rush Limbaugh, whose appearance at any chic cocktail party would cause the hostess to faint dead away, or with Thomas Sowell, who occupies probably the most unfashionable position in the country, that of a black conservative.

Limbaugh and Sowell both got Obama right from the very get-go. “Just what evidence do you have,” Sowell replied when I asked, shortly before the election, whether he considered Obama a centrist, “that he’s anything but a hard-left ideologue?”

The elite journalists, I repeat, got Obama wrong. The troglodytes got him right. As our national drama continues to unfold, bear that in mind.

А упомянутый Бакли-младший ему отвечает – мол, ну да, я был абсолютно неправ, но я и сейчас проголосовал бы за Обаму, потому что Обама, может, еще исправится, а МакКейн выбрал в вице-президенты религиозную экстремистку.

Все-таки эти ребята, которые называются элитой, везде одинаковы. Совершенно беспросветное зрелище.

Палин

Дым развеялся, и стали появляться все более интересные тексты, рассматривающие феномен Палин в прошедшей кампании.

Palin’s social conservatism had never been the core of her political identity in Alaska. She always expressed general support for traditionalist views in interviews and debates, and it was widely known that she had also chosen to proceed with her fifth pregnancy after discovering the child had Down syndrome—a discovery that in about nine of ten cases leads parents to opt for abortion. But Palin never went out of her way to raise abortion or other social or cultural issues, and in her first two years as governor had not sought to change state policies in these areas. She was a good-government reformer with social conservative leanings, not the other way around.

But this was not how Palin was received on the national scene. Instead, her views on matters of cultural and social controversy very quickly became the chief focus of media attention, liberal criticism, and pundit analysis. Palin was assigned every view and position the Left considered unenlightened, and the response to her brought into the light all manner of implicit liberal assumptions about cultural conservatives. We were told that Palin was opposed to contraception, advocated teaching creationism in schools, and was inclined to ban books she disagreed with. She was described as a religious zealot, an anti-abortion extremist, a blind champion of abstinence-only sex education. She was said to have sought to make rape victims pay for their own medical exams, to have Alaska secede from the Union, and to get Pat Buchanan elected President. She was reported to believe that the Iraq war was mandated by God, that the end-times prophesied in the Book of Revelation were nearing and only Alaska would survive, and that global warming was purely a myth. None of this was true.

What she lacked was not intelligence—she is, clearly, highly intelligent—but rather the particular set of assumptions, references, and attitudes inculcated by America’s top twenty universities and transmitted by the nation’s elite cultural organs.

Собственно, этот текст надо цитировать целиком, он внятен, целен и объективен.

Лично для меня после всей этой истории отношение к Палин стало одним из очевидных индикаторов. Человек, разделяющий ту лефтистскую культурную паранойю, о которой говорится в статье, воспринимается мной как человек сильно зашоренный и некритично податливый к давлению mass media.

Очень занят

В ленты почти не заглядываю.

Зато там, куда заглядываю, видны интересные сдвиги. Кажется, подходит к концу дикая кампания против Палин. Во всяком случае, осмысленные реплики доносятся уже и слева. Ben Smith пишет – “Mocking Sarah Palin has become a bit of a cottage industry, but it does seem worth pausing to doubt the quality of the information at this point”. Мол, может передохнем чуток и разберемся, а правда ли это все? Выясняется потихоньку, как именно запускались все эти дикие слухи – через несуществующего политического обозревателя, того же, кстати, через которого пошла клевета на Сантехника Джо. Выясняется, что Newsweek, сыгравший главную роль в этой кампании, тривиально врал. А в Salon – вот уж неожиданное место для подобного текста – Camille Paglia разошлась так, как будто это не Salon, а сайт Раша Лимбо.

Given that Obama had served on a Chicago board with Ayers and approved funding of a leftist educational project sponsored by Ayers, one might think that the unrepentant Ayers-Dohrn couple might be of some interest to the national media. But no, reporters have been too busy playing mini-badminton with every random spitball about Sarah Palin, who has been subjected to an atrocious and at times delusional level of defamation merely because she has the temerity to hold pro-life views.

How dare Palin not embrace abortion as the ultimate civilized ideal of modern culture? How tacky that she speaks in a vivacious regional accent indistinguishable from that of Western Canada! How risible that she graduated from the State University of Idaho and not one of those plush, pampered commodes of received opinion whose graduates, in their rush to believe the worst about her, have demonstrated that, when it comes to sifting evidence, they don’t know their asses from their elbows.

Liberal Democrats are going to wake up from their sadomasochistic, anti-Palin orgy with a very big hangover. The evil genie released during this sorry episode will not so easily go back into its bottle. A shocking level of irrational emotionalism and at times infantile rage was exposed at the heart of current Democratic ideology — contradicting Democratic core principles of compassion, tolerance and independent thought. One would have to look back to the Eisenhower 1950s for parallels to this grotesque lock-step parade of bourgeois provincialism, shallow groupthink and blind prejudice.

Мол, как же так, демократы якобы за терпимость и независимость мышления, а сами кидаются какашками что те мартышки в зоопарке, веря самой бессмысленной клевете. Как-то нехорошо получается.

Тот же Smith: “In any case, she has now moved into that incredibly dangerous political territory when people will believe anything about her.” Палин вступила в опасную зону, где люди готовы поверить любым сплетням про нее. Вступила, ага. Эту зону вокруг нее старательно создали в понятных целях. А людей, которые упорно отказываются пользоваться мозгами и верят любым идиотским слухам, более чем достаточно. И в ЖЖ их тоже хватает, к сожалению.

Perfect Man

Надо это оставить на память.

He fought the most perfect election campaign in living memory. He gave the world’s most perfect post-election address. He is tall, handsome, the leader of the free world and, days after his perfect victory, the transcript of his presidential election night speech is still making grown men weep. There is no doubting that Barack Obama is the perfect man: perfectly kind, perfectly funny, perfectly in love with his perfect wife and his perfect, charming, beautiful children. Dammit, even his hair is perfect.

Она ведь серьезно все это пишет. И она такая не одна.

Smears

То, что сейчас происходит вокруг Палин – совершенно закономерное явление. Кампания велась силами многочисленных профессионалов, то есть людей, которые зарабатывают на жизнь проведением политических кампаний. Кампания была провалена; Палин вернулась на Аляску в свой губернаторский кабинет, а профессионалы остались, и перед ними стоит проблема сохранения профессиональной репутации, потому что им и дальше надо зарабатывать на жизнь. Что им, спрашивается, делать? Можно попробовать объяснить, что они тут ни при чем, просто им пришлось работать с материалом, с которым не добился бы успеха никакой специалист.

Вот этим они сейчас и занимаются, задействовав все свои профессиональные навыки. А пресса радостно им подыгрывает.

Интересно, добьются ли они успеха. В смысле, удастся ли им сохранить собственный статус как специалистов. Думаю – нет; кампания велась из рук вон плохо, и этого им никто не забудет.

Заметим, однако, что этим занимаются далеко не все профессионалы, работавшие на кампанию.

Ну и к вопросу о drag on the ticket

Rassmussen:

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Republican voters say Alaska Governor Sarah Palin helped John McCain’s bid for the presidency, even as news reports surface that some McCain staffers think she was a liability.

Only 20% of GOP voters say Palin hurt the party’s ticket, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Six percent (6%) say she had no impact, and five percent (5%) are undecided.

Ninety-one percent (91%) of Republicans have a favorable view of Palin, including 65% who say their view is Very Favorable. Only eight percent (8%) have an unfavorable view of her, including three percent (3%) Very Unfavorable.

When asked to choose among some of the GOP’s top names for their choice for the party’s 2012 presidential nominee, 64% say Palin.

Еще про разницу

Реакция на проигрыш – не “they cheated!!!”, a “we deserved it”. Вот примеры – раз и два.

UPD: Без грязи, впрочем, не обходится и тут. МакКейновские штабные, как и предсказывалось пару недель назад, в порядке объяснения феерического результата кампании принялись без зазрения совести валить все на Палин. Ее стопятьдесяттыщ на гардероб постепенно превращаются в двести, причем потраченные лично ею, а кроме того, выясняется, что она не знала, что такое НАФТА. Это, заметим, имея опыт переговоров с канадцами по трубопроводным делам. Ага. Allahpundit по этому поводу:

It’s too cute by half, as is the detail about NAFTA; they might as well have tossed in a story about her having to guess who’s buried in Grant’s tomb. To believe it, you have to believe she figured out a way to become governor of Alaska while somehow lacking the mental power to piece together which three nations might be involved in the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Жизнь в оппозиции

О разнице между либералами и консерваторами: как республиканцам жить дальше.

The absolute wrong way to react to life in the minority is … well, what we saw from too many people on the Left the past 8 years: calling everyone from the President on down to individual soldiers and Marines war criminals, parroting the propaganda of our enemies, exposing classified national security secrets on the front pages of the newspapers, and generally doing whatever possible to stymie the national defense and convince the nation and the world that America is the bad guy. We’re better than that. When Obama fails to act to defend America and its interests and allies, or violates the basic common-sense principles of national security and foreign policy, we will of course be unsparing in our criticism. But we should not emulate the Left; indeed, the day may even come when Obama needs defending from the Left for doing what needs to be done, and we certainly want to encourage him to take actions that provoke that reaction.

По-моему, в высшей степени разумно. Разве что призыв насчет страхования жизни мне кажется не слишком оправданным, а предложение молиться – это на любителя. Тезисы же насчет того, что оспаривать результат или винить неразумных избирателей глупо, а оппонировать надлежит Обаме, а не Америке, поддерживаю полностью.

Еще на эту тему, Victor Davis Hanson:

In the future, criticism should be offered in unified pro-American tones, rather than anti-Obama screeds. When disagreements arise, they should be couched in a sense of regret rather than ebullition. There should be no conservative counterparts of Bill Maher, Michael Moore, or Al Franken.

И в заключение

Собственно говоря, прогноз благоприятный. Если Обама и в самом деле такая циничная беспринципная гнида, какой он мне представляется после этой кампании, то все будет в порядке. Страна при нем процветет, а самого его канонизируют и высекут в камне горы Рашмор. Вот если он человек принципов и всерьез займется делом социализма и классовой справедливости, а также мирным международным сотрудничеством – тогда без крупных неприятностей не обойдемся. Но этот вариант все-таки кажется мне менее вероятным.

Популизма и всякой демагогии будет, конечно, много. Это тоже неплохо. Пусть левые вздохнут полной грудью после того неизбывного мрака и ужаса, в котором они, бедолаги, существовали последние восемь лет. Заодно и тише станет.
