NYT про Обаму и его ближневосточную политику: In Arab Spring, Obama Finds a Sharp Test

Хороший заголовок; вроде как Обама этот тест еще сдает, и, возможно, успешно сдаст. Из текста, однако, следует, что экзамен этот давно и убедительно Обамой провален.

The end of Mr. Mubarak’s 30-year rule, Mr. Obama said, “must begin now.” With those words, Mr. Obama upended three decades of American relations with its most stalwart ally in the Arab world, putting the weight of the United States squarely on the side of the Arab street.

It was a risky move by the American president, flying in the face of advice from elders on his staff at the State Department and at the Pentagon, who had spent decades nursing the autocratic — but staunchly pro-American — Egyptian government.

Nineteen months later, Mr. Obama was at the State Department consoling some of the very officials he had overruled. Anti-American protests broke out in Egypt and Libya.

Smart Diplomacy

Если же прессе удается отвлечься от того, какой Ромни весь плохой, и вернуться все-таки к сути дела, то происходят примерно такие разговоры:

TODD: I just want to get your first reaction, before you give me a report, of the President saying Egypt was not an ally or an enemy.

ENGEL: Yeah, I almost had to sit down when I heard that. For the last forty years, the United States has had two main allies in the Middle East — Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the other ally in the Middle East being Israel. For the President to come out and say, well, he’s not exactly sure if Egypt is an ally any more but it’s not an enemy, that is a significant change in the perspective of Washington toward this country, the biggest country in the Arab world. It makes one wonder, well, was it worth it? Was it worth supporting the Arab Spring, supporting the demonstrations here in Tahrir Square, when now in Tahrir Square there are clashes going on behind me right in front of the US embassy?

В прочих местах выражения выбирают тщательнее, но смысл примерно тот же: политика Обамы на Ближнем Востоке – полный и убедительный провал. Der Spiegel: “Obama’s Middle East Policy Is in Ruins”.

UPD: разъяснения от Белого дома в том духе, что Египет не то чтобы не ally, он вообще-то ally, но не совсем ally, а так, слегка, в отличие от тех allies, которые совсем, а самое главное – все это сильно зависит от значения слова ally. Теперь все в порядке и всем все понятно. Это ж не Ромни; если бы тот такое сказал, получился бы эпохальный gaffe, неоспоримо свидетельствующий о неготовности Ромни быть президентом.

Several pro-Israel sections of the 2008 Democratic Party platform have been removed from the 2012 platform—on Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees, and Hamas. The new platform represents another shift by the Obama Democrats toward the Palestinian position on key issues in the peace process.

Вообще-то на израильскую тему все республиканские кандидаты высказались неслабо. Вот подборка на HuffPo: наиболее ужасные с левой точки зрения цитаты. В комплект – комментарий автора подборки, ну и прочие комментарии, само собой, просто чтобы не забывать, как оно.

Тот же Гингрич:

“As President, on my first day in office, I will issue an executive order directing the US Embassy in Israel to be moved to Jerusalem as provided for in the legislation I introduced in Congress in 1995… The United States should explicitly reject the concept of a right of return for Palestinian refugees. The so-called right of return is a historically impossible demand that would be a demographic disaster and mean the end of the Jewish state of Israel. Well, I believe that the Jewish people have a right to have a state, and I believe that the commitments that were made at the time – now, remember, there was no Palestine as a state, it was part of the Ottoman Empire, and I think that we’ve had an invented Palestinian people who are in fact Arabs and were historically part of the Arab community. And they had a chance to go many places and for a variety of political reasons we have sustained this war against Israel now since the 1940s. And I think it’s tragic.

Справедливый гнев

Конгресс заблокировал кусок помощи палестинцам. Палестинцы возмущаются, обвиняют Конгресс в разных грехах и требуют своих законных денег.

Очередной внешнеполитический триумф

Палестинцы, не обращая внимания на Обаму, все-таки подали в ООН свою челобитную. Следовало ожидать – на него теперь вообще мало кто внимание обращает.

Нюансы

Часть комментаторов по поводу вчерашнего выступления Обамы сообщает, что он не сказал ничего нового, и никаких изменений в американской позиции по израильско-палестинскому конфликту не обозначил.

Другая часть полагает, что мы наблюдаем серьезное изменение этой позиции, причем ошибочное.

Есть и третья гипотеза: Обама просто по обыкновению облажался и уже сдает назад под видом уточнений и дополнений.

Можно выбирать на вкус. Мне пока – до появления новых объяснений от Обамы – предпочтительнее третья.
