Профессор, преподававший в каком-то техникуме media studies, тырил знаки “МакКейн-Палин”, и хвастался достижениями в блоге на Huffington Post. На этом был взят за задницу, и теперь ему светит три месяца тюрьмы или тысяча долларов штрафа. Из колледжа его поперли незамедлительно.

Воровство наглядной агитации профессор медийных наук полагал формой политического самовыражения.

Вот такими и останутся эти выборы в памяти народной.

One can only ask how much higher our 16.2% unemployment rate – an obvious legacy of the Bush years – might be if President Obama had not restored America’s standing in the world and re-negotiated unfair trade treaties imposed on American workers by previous administrations.

As our president remarked just the other day in a re-election campaign speech in Dearborn, Michigan: “Wealth redistribution isn’t just an American issue – it’s a global issue. Better that Americans should be a little poorer, if that means our brothers in Egypt and Bolivia can become a little richer.”

This Tuesday, we’ll find out who wins the presidential election – Michigan Governor Hillary Rodham Clinton or Republican candidate Charlie Crist of Florida. An exhausted President Barack Obama will soon return home to Illinois. But he can do so in the knowledge that he tried his best, and leaves a solid foundation for the next president, even if most voters can’t see it yet.

It’s hard to imagine now, but when Obama first took office, the experts thought that the consumer-led recession that had deepened precipitously in the fourth quarter of 2008 would be short, with the economy starting to recover in the fall of 2009, at the latest.

There are no shortage of recriminatory theories for President Obama’s precipitous fall from would-be messiah, to near pariah. Discussions with leaders within the Democratic Party, including prominent former members of the Obama administration, give a kaleidoscopic picture of missed opportunities, wrong turns and embarrassing blunders.

Это тут уже было, но оно актуально на любых выборах. Я вижу, особенно продвинутые сторонники демократов уже беспокоятся кое-где на всякий случай о “республиканцах, которые контролируют избирательные машины”.

Бритва Оббамы

Облик грядущего постепенно обретает внятные черты.

Пока обещаются проблемы для угольной промышленности. Дело в том, что она неэкологична, а это нынче вещь неприемлемая. Хрен с ним, с электричеством, которое из угля добывают, главное – не выработать лишку парниковых газов.

You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, uh, you know — Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.

Таким образом предполагается создать условия для перехода на более экологичные методы обеспечения энергией. От этого экономика только выиграет – когда придет в себя от предложенных мер.

Um, if you can’t persuade the American people that yes, there is going to be some increase in electricity rates on the front end, but that over the long term, because of combinations of more efficient energy usage, changing lightbulbs and more efficient appliance, but also technology improving how we can produce clean energy, the economy would benefit.

Что теперь скажут те многочисленные люди, которые зимой издевались над Бушем по поводу экономичных лампочек? Нет им спасения даже и от Обамы.

На очереди – сельское хозяйство, где ситуация еще хуже. Оно, по мнению Обамы, не только вносит свой вклад в глобальное потепление, но и виновато в ожирении, сердечных заболеваниях, диабете и прочих бедствиях, постигших население Соединенных Штатов. Там, правда, Обама конкретных мер пока вроде бы не предлагает. Видимо, еще в разработке.

Очень интересно, в общем. А сколько еще всякого разного мы после выборов узнаем!

Учитесь долгосрочному планированию

На Zomblog‘е появились выдержки из газеты WU под названием Osawatomie, выпущенной в 1975 году. Газета использует очень узнаваемую сейчас терминологию и говорит об очень знакомых вещах.

Much of Osawatomie, which was written at a time when the Dohrn-Ayers wing of the Weather Underground was transitioning from terrorism to “working from the inside” for revolution, concerns itself with the need to encourage “organizers” who will work in “communities” and use “audacity” to bring about “socialism” in America.

Если это правда, то Айерс – это вам не какой-нибудь щенок Карл Роув. Пацаны сказали – пацаны сделали. Лидеры Weather Underground занялись “работой изнутри” истэблишмента, и вот результат: community organizer, написавший о себе книгу Audacity of Hope и начавший политическую карьеру в доме Айерса, послезавтра станет президентом Соединенных Штатов.

Где-то я это уже видел. А, ну да – “мы пойдем другим путем”.

The Stranger в Сиэттле публикует фотографии и адреса домов, жители которых позволили себе выставить знак в поддержку МакКейна. Народ должен знать, чьи гаражи и машины украшать про-обамиными граффити.

Roger L. Simon про то, как bias превращается в элементарную нечестность:

But bias, bad as it may be, is not the real problem. Everybody has a bias. We all know that. It’s when bias creates dishonesty that the dry rot sets in. The media has been essentially dishonest in its non-investigation of Obama for what now is several years. With all their vast resources, they have given us virtually no reportage on his years at Harvard and Columbia and he is about to become President of the United States.

And this dishonesty, clearly perceived by the public even as it will likely elect Obama, is what accounts for a great deal of the economic woes of the mainstream media today. That same public know the NYT, LAT and WaPo are no longer reliable sources. The Washinton Post’s — clearly the best of the three – earnings plummeting 86% in the third quarter of this year is no longer a surprise, nor is it entirely related to the overall economic meltdown.

It will be interesting to see if there is a shift in their coverage in the aftermath of the election. My guess is that it will take some time for that ship to right itself, if it ever does. The embarrassment factor would be too great – even if it would satisfy some of their shareholders.

Dan Rather’s career imploded when he knowingly promulgated a forged document that impugned the service record of George W. Bush. We’ve known for a long time — from various polling, and records of political donations of journalists themselves, as well as surveys of public perceptions — that the vast majority of journalists identify themselves as Democratic, and liberal in particular.

Yet we have never quite seen anything like the current media infatuation with Barack Obama, and its collective desire not to raise key issues of concern to the American people.

A tight race now would muddy our narrative about the transformational figure, The One. Forbes readers may scoff at Barack Obama as the messiah, but we don’t. Give him eight years in the Oval Office, and the man with the most liberal voting record in the Senate will move the whole country our way. The One will make us “mainstream” once again. He might even make us profitable once again.

Why am I writing for Forbes? Let’s put it this way: The Obamacons–the conservatives who have rushed to endorse Obama–aren’t the only ones hedging their bets. If McCain wins, the mainstream media will remain what it really is, the “more and more marginal media,” and I have a career to think about.
